The National Main Street Program was formed 25 years ago by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Under its direction, the New Mexico Main Street Program (supervised by New Mexico Economic Development) has fostered the revitalization of numerous local downtown districts across New Mexico. New Mexico MainStreet utilizes the Main Street Four-Point Approach® of Organization, Design, Promotion and Economic Positioning while tailoring to meet local needs and opportunities. This preservation-based strategy for commercial district revitalization is now employed by more than 2,000 communities nationwide.
MainStreet has been the premier organization that brings life to New Mexico’s downtowns since 1985. Currently, there are 23 affiliated MainStreet projects and 6 state-authorized Arts and Cultural Districts statewide.
Barelas Community Coalition is the organization charged with assisting the revitalization of 4th Street as a MainStreet under this program. 4th Street was established as an emerging Main Street community in 2013. For more information please visit www.barelasmainstreet.org.
